The Urban Shop Organic Clothing featured in DJ Magazine

Current issue of DJ Magazine has a feature on Organic clothing and so they had to contact your favourite urban clothing shop to get the low-down and featured some of the Planet Earth range including the Gooding Hemp Jacket and the Ashton Ramie jeans, they did have a few nice words to add about us to(see below)

The Urban Shop is the most super-exquisite urban clothes store, housing the Planet Earth label, an entirely organic-friendly brand (note: not quite right only the Green Label garments are organic). Check their uber rad site with its natty design and full ranges of footwear, optics and apparel. Very tasty indeed.

Some Facts about Organic Clothing

We’ve written a few pieces now about organic clothing fabrics and ethical clothing but here’s some interesting facts these are US figures as most research seems to be going on there.

It takes about a third a pound of pesticides to produce one cotton T-shirt.

About 180 to 300 pounds of chemical fertilizer is used on one acre of cotton.

Approx 90% of the fertilizer washes off, ending up in water supplies and habitat.

It’s predicted that with celebrities endorsing hybrid cars, vegetarian diets and launching their own eco-friendly clothing lines, it’s only a matter of time before the Hollywood trend caught on with fashion.

The big names are quick to join in for whatever reason Stella McCartney is including organic fabrics in her collections and U2's Bono launched his socially conscious clothing line, Edun, in 2005 in an attempt to increase trade and create sustainable employment in countries like Africa.

Organic & Sustainable Fabrics

Sustainable fabrics are fabrics which are biodegradable and made without chemical additives, such as petroleum, and pesticides or insecticides are becoming more available. High-profile companies have jumped on the "green" bandwagon i.e. Gucci featured bamboo items in a recent collection, but eco fashion is still far from mainstream.

Hemp fabric, is similar to linen, is derived from the cannabis plant, aka marijuana. Because of its origin, the cultivation of industrial hemp is illegal in the United States and because of the strong production of cotton in the US it will probably remain banned.

In 1999, Li Guangi created a soybean fibre a silky fabric that apparently feels like cashmere. Part of it’s appeal is that it is antimicrobial, which mean it inhibits bacterial growth, and wicks away moisture and it also offers ultraviolet ray protection, and make s the tea (no we made the tea bit up).

Another new eco- textile is made from the pulp of the fastest-growing plant on the planet, bamboo and it’s feel is compared to silk. Attributes include breathability and moisture absorption.

Interesting but you try and buy them even searching for soy clothing on the net brings up little joy, that said we are working with a few companies that produce hemp t-shirts, use organic cottons for t-shirts, polo’s and jeans, Planet Earth even use Ramie (a grass) to produce jeans and recently we have added No Sweat who construct Hemp Baseball Boots.
