Reality Check

Been thinking about writing this post for a while and it’s been hard to bring myself to do this but here goes.

I don’t know about you but I like to live life to the full and whilst I need to think about the future and what it holds I don’t rob the present and try and fully enjoy the moment because no amount or worry will solve anything. So credit crunch, collapsing property markets and job insecurity that about covers the doom but not for some but not for Tracy here’s her story in brief.

Tracy is my wife’s cousin, she’s in her forties worked hard all her life, was married and had a beautiful daughter that she loved. About six months ago maybe a year Tracy and family went on holiday, they loved their holidays and this was 2 weeks in the USA. Two days in and her husband told her he couldn’t do this anymore and was leaving her on their return to the UK. On return to UK they split what seems like only weeks later Tracy was confirmed has having cancer and underwent test only to find out that it was terminal. Friday 13th February 2009 Tracy passed away.

The moral, is there one? Enjoy life to the MAX

Urban Retailers listen up the end is near

Maybe it’s time to shut down or have a massive rethink as the big boys are entering the market of urban fashion, streetwear and hip hop, let hope independent thinkers stick with the independent retailers, I mean who wants to look like everybody else?
Anyway on to the story

There’s a new men's clothing line designed by hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons called American Classics, and will launch in the next few weeks at 350 US Wal-Mart stores.

A search on some obscure website called walmart[dot]com reveals the line appears mainstream, even preppy, with plaid shorts, button-down shirts, zip cargo pants and a cable knit sweater.

Simmons, who designs the Phat Farm and Argyle Culture apparel lines, told BusinessWeek magazine recently that his focus for American Classics is the "urban graduate," whom he described as a 25- to 50-year-old man who identifies with men ranging from Will Smith to President Obama.

Simmons has been instrumental in bringing the powerful influence of hip-hop culture to every facet of business and media since its inception in the late 1970s and has been listed as the most influential mogul in hip hop. From producing and/or managing such early hip-hop artists such as Kurtis Blow, Run-DMC (Run is Russell's brother), Whodini and the Beastie Boys to signing contemporary superstars like Jay-Z and Tupac Shakur, Simmons’ groundbreaking vision was crystallized with partner Rick Rubin in the creation of the seminal Def Jam Recordings in 1984, launching the cultural revolution known as hip-hop.

Meanwhile, Sears (another US big boy) is showing off its line of denim, T-shirts and hoodies by hip-hop artist LL Cool J at New York's Fashion Week.

Anti Valentines Fewdays

It's Anti Valentines Fewdays. You know what we mean, if you are in a "relationship" at the moment then you will have been reminded a lot about it over the last few weeks, how you should spend, spend, spend on your other half to show her your undying love and boy do the shops help you with lovey dovey teddy bears which have gone up in price by 100% since the beginning of February, just because they have wrapped a red ribbon round it's fluffy neck, (I know what I would tie round their necks!) and florists that have also been mysteriously hit by massive price increases over the last few days.

Well we want to give you something to smile about so we’ve invent Anti Valentines Fewdays, where you just stay in and buy yourself something and you know what how about 15% discount.

On the other hand if you are free and easy and not tied to the ball and chain of love and romance then you may be feeling out of it this weekend but don't worry, sturban clothing believes everyone should share and share alike so feel free to use the Anti Valentines Fewdays 15% discount too, but you have to enter by one of these links and it ends midnight Sunday 15th Feb.

Oh, and if your true love DOES give you a teddy tomorrow instead of the Diamond t-shirt you mentioned you REALLY needed. You have my permission to tie that red bow REALLY tight round it's lovey dovey, fluffy neck!!

ps: please, don't show this email to your other half, she may know my misus and it could all end up in tears.............. for me :-( .

Shepard Fairey (Obey) Locked up!!

Shepard Fairey, Andre the Giant, Obey, 38, was arrested on his way to the Institute of Contemporary Art for a kickoff event for his first solo exhibition, called "Supply and Demand."

Two warrants were issued for Shepard on Jan. 24 after police determined he'd tagged property in two locations with graffiti based on the Andre the Giant street art campaign from his early career.

Shepard has spent the last two weeks in the Boston area installing the ICA exhibit and creating outdoor art, including a 20-by-50 foot banner on the side of City Hall, according to a statement issued Saturday by the museum.

The museum said Shepard Fairey was released a few hours after his arrest, but authorities did not immediately confirm that.

Shepard Fairey's Obama image has been sold on hundreds of thousands of stickers and posters, and was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington before Obama's inauguration.

The image is the subject of a copyright dispute with The Associated Press. Shepard argues his use of the AP photo is protected by "fair use," which allows exceptions to copyright laws based on, among other factors, how much of the original is used, what the new work is used for and how the original is affected by the new work.

Now there has been a few people suggesting Obey had sold out but I think getting locked up raises his credibility once more ;-) Good luck Shepard

Future trends in streetwear

This is an edited article that was originally printed in Draper record, including a few of our comments.

A staunchly commercial and risk-averse sensibility has infiltrated the young fashion and streetwear sector for autumn 09.

This has led to a season in which winners are backed to the hilt and key looks have moved on only slightly from previous seasons. Subtle details, rather than trend, provides autumn 09’s point of difference for brands. Brands are playing it safe and not investing in any risky ventures.

Young fashion brands have backed themes including the great outdoors, a military/utility aesthetic, the 1980s, and goth-rock.

For men, checked shirts, heavy knits and jackets with military detailing. The goth-lite look of skinny jeans and tuxedo jackets for both sexes also lives on for another season. We have backed most of these trends except for the skinny jeans and we don't agree and think that look is on its way out

“We do tend to be very loyal to our brands, but we are always looking for something new,” said Geoff Brownless, director of menswear independent Union in Newcastle upon Tyne. “We’ll be looking out for more subtle branding rather than big logos. We stock a lot of classic dark denim, and for autumn 09 we’ll be buying into straight styles as well as looser carrot shapes. Customers are more cautious, but it’s always worth having some interesting pieces too.” That first comment is so true, in fact I personally agree with the second also. I do think right now jeans are generally tighter than they have been for a while and that will continue but they are getting baggy again also, carrot leg jeans a big style for us with our early adapters.

Will James, manager of menswear store Natterjacks in Kingston-upon-Thames, “Knitwear-as-outerwear is becoming a key category for us. We will persist with checked shirts - ginghams are selling well for us in micro and larger versions.” We have loved our knitwear for years now and generally buy in a good selection

Beach, Harrogate, owner Tim Idle said: “We always look for key pieces that don’t look high street, but we get more of our trend-led product from short-order. We try to be open-minded about the trends we want to buy into each season.” Top man that's the key "pieces that don’t look high street".

New York Grafifti Artist Crash

Born in New York City in 1961, by the middle of 1989, at the age of 28, Crash had been featured in dozens of one-man and group shows at galleries and museums around the world. Crash's paintings, watercolors and prints show the influence of a number of pop artists, including Lichtenstein, Rosenquist and Johns, yet they are convincingly original, retaining the power and humor of the hip-hop era. Unlike many painters whose perspective changes with their elevated status in the art world, Crash remains loyal to his inspiration. His large-scale paintings that were executed on the sides of the trains inspired his large scale paintings that are now in many collections throughout the world.

Google may harm your computer

Even the best of us make mistakes has Google admits for a period on Saturday (31 Jan 09), Google's search service was hit by technical problems, with users unable to access search results. all search results were flagged as potentially harmful, with users warned that the site "may harm your computer".

"What happened? Very simply, human error," wrote Marissa Mayer, vice president, search products and user experience, on the Official Google Blog.

The internet search engine works with stopbadware.org to ascertain which sites install malicious software on people's computers and merit a warning.

When Google updated the list on Saturday, it mistakenly flagged all sites as potentially dangerous.

"We will carefully investigate this incident and put more robust file checks in place to prevent it from happening again," Ms Mayer wrote.

Tut Tut we forgive you but do we get compensation for lost traffic and customers? We wont wait for a reply, only kidding guy's you do a great job

Boom Monk Ben Dubstep Podcast

The lovely Rowan (Ben's ladyfriend) locked me in the house last week when she went to work. Rather than risk breaking an ankle by jumping out the window so as to get a pint of milk and a copy of The Guardian I thought I'd record a mix instead. It's a bit of a dubsteppy affair with some jump up rude bwoy bits as well as some nice deep skankers. It's nothing fancy but makes for good listening. See what you think...
