Win original Bill Blast NY Graffiti

BILL BLAST - "I love to make things containing a message. In the past, we did the same on the trains. When the trains passed, the people could see our messages. It was fantastic. Graffiti completely swallowed me. I was fascinated to see the huge paintings entering the subway stations. In the beginning some paintings stayed on the trains for 3 years.I started in the 70's when there was an unwritten law not to go over anyone else's piece. You could only challenge it by doing another piece. That manner of respecting each other has gone now.”

You can win original graffiti from old school New York graffiti writers Bill Blast, Quik, Crash and Noc167 in SturbanClothing / Graffiti Collection giveaway or if you cant wait or don't want to miss getting your hands on these original vintage, limited edition print you can buy them from The Graffiti Collection at a SPECIAL PRICE for SturbanClothing readers

SturbanClothing sNOOk Podcast 18 Jan 09

k this week we have a sly podcast from sNOOK it was originally done as a radio show for DFM so there's no SturbanClothing drops in there, is that a good or bad thing? Our view is we host them and that does cost us money in not only time getting it together but also bandwidth, which is the reason we do ask people to join the forum and take part in the Ping Pong Sessions and generally comment. Hey there's gotta be some payback that's only fair isn't it?

Vintage New York Graffiti from Quik

When he was 10 years old, Quik, who was living in Queens, saw the trains passing by, full of graffiti tags.It was 1968, a dramatic time in American history. Martin Luther King had just been killed and young graffiti artists (accidentally or not) started tagging their names on walls and subway trains, stating their own (small) identity as black people. It turned out to be of big influence on the young Lin Felton who would become one of the society critics of the New York Graffiti movement.

Meet sNOOk

Introducing our latest mate, fellow blogger and new UrbanShop contributor sNOOk

A few words from the man himself well I am 33 and been living in Plymouth for 10 years since passing my Building Surveying degree. Originally from Torbay. Son of hippy parents. 1 of 4 brothers. I have 2 lovely kids from a previous relationship. Alice 10 and Daisy 6. They are my world basically.

I have always been into raving since I was about 14 / 15. Used to come down to Warehouse and Academy all the time to see all the names back in the day! I always wanted to DJ but being a student could never afford it. Since MP3 I have been able to afford new material and so started mixing on my laptop with Virtual DJ and a mixer. That was about 2 years ago. I have been mixing Dubstep for just over a year and before that it was all kinds of stuff from minimal techno to drum and bass to dub to hip hop. Mashup.

In my mind Dubstep is the perfect sound. It brings together all the best elements of so many different genres into one chest whompin bass hit! It is the missing piece I had been searching for.

I have been playing out over past 6 months which has been truly amazing. Such a buzz to have the power to make people freak out and start busting some moves! Crazy.
I have done a wide range of things from skate jams over the last year(Central Park and Mount Hawke Skatepark) to clubs (Frevela), from super chilled (Voodoo Lounge Cafe Concrete) to super hectic (Sub Heavy sets - last one was the Benny Page night 21-11-08) Pics on the myspace I recently pimped for my friend Bob at Subheavy

The rest of my time is spent running my website skateparkpages.com with my best mate Dan Pratley. We cover Skate and BMX videos, pics, news, skatepark details etc and are currently Google's number 1 site with around 30,000 visitors per month.

Ok my fingers hurt now so must stop typing.

J'-DA Kut, Bar Vinyl @ Bar Vinyl

J' Da-Kut was laying down some Funk, Hip Hop, and Disco Jams down at Bar Vinyl Camden and our man Kulez went down to check the action.

Was a proper sick night! Free entry, cheap drink, especially during the happy hour got me licked. Despite it being the second Monday of 09, the turn out was still live. I recommend Bar Vinyl on a Monday if you’re up for a calm hip hop/ funk jam playing all the classics with your mates to recover from a mad weekend. Well that’s what I was there for.

It started off as old school hip hop from the 90s era, perfect to nod too and would keep your head ringing. As the night went on, I think I got too leery to realise which disc jockey was on, (no disrespect), but turntablism ranged from some hevi cuts to mixing records even I had forgotten about.

I look forward to the next one on the 19th which features Excentral Tempest and the live band.

Kulez

Always glad to make real cool new friends here at SturbanClothing and here's a battler we just hooked up with and he's going to start writing for the blog, introducing Kulez.

The soul survivor wrestling lions and wilder beasts through Kruger Park made it to the southern coast of Africa. Smuggled in a suitcase baby Kulez found himself on British shores.

A few years later, as a youth sneaking into clubs with fake I.D Kulez made a little name for himself by holding on to the Battle Norwich title. He continued to make an impact on the battle scene as a champion of jumpoff.tv.

Wining the UK S.J qualifiers made him the first ever rapper from England to follow in Eminem’s footsteps and compete in scribble jam when he was only 16. Away from battling, Kulez’s tracks and freestyles have been featured on pirate radio stations, Kiss 100 fm, 1 Xtra, HHB radio, BBC Radio, MTV Base, channel U and have received good feedback.

Gaining experience form such a young age he has hosted various events around the country. Although mainly recording hip hop, Kulez is known for his versatile style which means he has undertaken hip hop, dubstep and even grime live sets, supporting the likes of Necro, Task Force, Sway, Jehst, Foreign Beggars, Plastician, Michael Parknson, Ghetto, Devlin, Logan D, Stig, Dr.Syntax, Rusko, Sonnyjim, Kosyne, Gentlemans Dub Club, Jack Flash and more.

U might find him selling fake Rolexes from a trench coat in Magaluf or on www.myspce.com/kulez.... keep ya eyes out...

New York Graffiti Noc167

"Graffiti needs to be refreshing". NOC167 calls himself a Graffiti Prince because he's the only one with this graffiti name among the many graffiti artists calling themselves Kings. Like many graffiti writers did, 167 stands for the street number where he lives in New York. NOC167 started tagging when he was 11 years old. A few years later he became a member of the famous Death Squad and he became the president of that group. He was also a member of OTB (Out To Bomb), a group that was doing lots of trains. His famous train Style Wars represents the wars between the different graffiti letters styles during the seventies.

Jabba Tha Kut Interview

As one of the most consistent DJ’s in the UK, Jabba Tha Kut has been on his grind recently producing and doing cuts for some of Hip-Hop’s biggest names including skits for SturbanClothing "100% Exclusive". Tricksta hooked up with him to talk about his new double CD for Hip-Hop Basement Radio.

Whattup Jabba how you been? Have a good Christmas and New Yew?
Easy Tricksta man, u good fella? Yeah man apart from having flu all over Xmas it was a good one thanks.

2008 was a good year for you and seen you feature on some Stateside releases. Tell us about who you worked with.
Yeah man I been doing beats and cuts for SWISS PRECISE, ED OG, EVIDENCE (DILATED PEOPLES), CASUAL(HIEROGLYPHICS), HIGH&MIGHTY, THE FORTYSEVEN, DIZZY DUSTIN(UGLY DUCKLING), DJ JS-1 (RAHZEL’S DJ), PETEY PARKER (PROMINENT SONS), MASTER FUOL(ODB’S COUSIN).

Last time we spoke with you said you where ‘an old skool DJ’ and still use vinyl and a CDR. Have you been converted to the laptop way of mixing yet?
Yeah man basically due to the fact we had a tour in L.A LONGBEACH back in July so I didn’t want to be carrying around heavy cases & paying surplus surcharges etc so I purchased Serato scratch live as it just made sense, it’s also good for doing specific cuts from certain samples or sentences that artists send through my way for tracks. I still like to play vinyl out though; I like to have my hands in all the pies!! haha.

The radio show on HHB Radio has been going for some time. How long you have you actually been doing that now and how did you hook up with Vokal & Lunatrix?
Hmmm I’ve been doing my HHB Radio show now for about 3 years and hooked up with them fellas through the net, got chatting on msn etc and that was that, a sick hook up!

OYM Records have now launched HHB Radio Records and they are kicking off with a new series called ‘The DJ Sessions’ which kicks off with your mix. Let’s talk about that for a minute. Who features on the mix?
It will be available to buy on Feb 23rd 2009 and it features the likes of CONSTANT CREATIONS, SIR SMURF LIL, MUSTARD ENGLISH, TRIPLE DARKNESS, CUT ABOVE RECORS, SKIBADEE, BROTHERMAN, JACK FLASH, LYRICAL-T, FRANKO FRAIZE, LARUSSO, DOC BROWN, LOWKEY, GENTLEMANS CLUB, UNFRIENDLY NEIGHBOURS, DUBAR, SWIFT IT MAJOR, DIRTY DIGGERS, LIFE, KYZA, LATE, MOS DEF, ABORIGINALS, LAMENT, DJ BABU, MARCO POLO, SUPASTITION, CL SMOOTH, DJ REVOLUTION, SWISS PRECISE, EVIDENCE, REKS, BUTTA VERSES, DJ SAT ONE, CONCISE & DJ SERIOUS.

So its UK and USA artists, how did you go about getting the tracks and what’s the actual mix like?
At the time I was asked to do the mix I just pulled out the tunes I was feeling the most at the time, not all of the tunes are brand new but are the ones I was feeling and mixed in nicely. Ha ha the mix is a fine blend of silky smooth mixing, crisp cutting, dope breakbeating & nice juggling, I don’t go over the top on cuts etc as I want people to enjoy the music as well as enjoy my skills so it’s a nice blend musically.

So it’s a double CD? How many tracks on each disc?
There's 21 in total on each disc, including intros & outro’s.

When’s it out to buy?
23rd February 2009.

What goes on with your label Cut Above Records? Anything planned for 2009?
Cut above records consist of myself and DYVERSITY, MAGISHAN, DUBAR, SUICYDE, MR.METERZ & TEMPA. THIS YEAR I,M WORKING ON STUFF WITH LYRICAL-T, SUPAR NOVAR, CHUBBY ALCOHOLIC, SWIFT IT MAJOR, KULEZ, SONNYJIM, GRIMLOK, CONSPICUOUS, COBANE, SKILF, RICTA,THE FORTYSEVEN, SWISS PRECISE, PROMINENT SONS, MAGISHAN, DUBAR, SUICYDE ETC.

Will we ever see a Jabba Tha Kut album?
Yes you will this year hopefully, I’m working on tracks so far with SUPAR NOVAR, GRIMLOK, SWIFT IT MAJOR, KULEZ, CHUBBY ALCOHOLIC, SKILF, MAGISHAN, SUICYDE, DEADLY HUNTA, BROTHERMAN, SWISS PRECISE, PETEY PARKER, CONSPICUOUS, COBANE, WORLD RENOWNED ETC.. I got much more to come man!

Grit Grammer Interview

Where are you from and what was it like growing up there?
I have lived most of my life in various parts of North London. It’s a good place to live and very diverse culturally, and there are lots of opportunities in London creatively. Its also gully as fuck, but that’s the same in any big city.

How did you get your name and is there a story behind it?
There’s no real story to it. Over the years I’ve gone through various name changes. I used to call myself Grhyme years ago, but changed it to Grit, and at some point one of my boys added Grammar, which stuck. I’m also referred to as just Grit.

Was there a situation or a person who inspired you to rap?

My mate Creep got me started rapping. We always used to blaze in our cars listening to new shit, and Creep just started fucking about and freestyling all the time, and I just fed of that and started doing it myself. We started writing verses and doing tracks over instrumentals, but I started taking it more seriously and spent a lot of time writing. Creep eventually stopped rapping and concentrated on just producing.

Tell us about your latest release.
It’s called ‘Reflections In The Dark’ and it’s just a small promo project I put together to start promoting myself and getting my name out there a bit. Its got 13 original tracks on it, and also showcasing the talents of the various producers I have worked with over the years. Most of the tracks are old, but I threw in a couple of new joints in there as well. It only has 1 feature on it, which is Baron Samedi who is also fully producing my untitled forthcoming album.

What do you prefer; playing live, recording in the studio or battling?

I’m not a battle MC and it’s not a part of the game I have ever really tried developing much. However if some one wants to battle me I got no problem stepping up, and it is an essential part of any MC’s arsenal. I like recording, but find most pleasure in listening back to a completed track, and performing in front of a crowd.

How would you describe your personality?
Generally I’m pretty chilled and easy going. It takes a lot to wind me up but when I do, I tend to explode a bit.

What do you enjoy doing the most?
Making music, seeing my girl and watching movies.

What’s your favourite clothing label?
I’ve always been into garms and what I like busting always changes, but one brand I always liked and I feel has stayed consistent is Stussy. They pretty much created streetwear and in terms of T-shirt designs they always represent the elements of Street culture that I’m interested in, like Graffiti Culture, Tattoo Culture, and obviously hip-hop. The designs and printing is always top quality and they always collaborate with dope artists and other labels. I’ve also always liked the label Supreme for similar reason. I’m also it Japanese brands like Bounty Hunter and Neighbourhood. Saying all that I couldn’t give a hoot about a label if the design and concept of the item is good.

Do you ever buy clothes or music on-line?
Yeah definitely. I buy a lot of music online, and buy garms online as long as I know how a label fits in terms of size. SturbanClothing has got some sick items so make sure you lot support!!

What is your favourite record shop and why?
All my favourite record shops have closed down. I used to work in an independent music store as the hip-hop specialist, but the internet and downloading has destroyed them and most have now closed down, many of which where strong supporters of UK hip-hop. It’s a shame.

With so many artists out there, what are you doing different to get heard?

I don’t think I’m doing anything majorly different from anyone else determined to come up in the game. I do however try to network as much as possible and not necessarily only in the UK hip-hop scene. Even though the music I make is straight UK hip-hop, I feel its important to connect with people outside the genre, and people involved with street fashion and art to increase your exposure.

Okay, before you go please give us you’re My Space details.
You can check me on myspace.com/grituk and download Reflections in the Dark for free

Big up yourself for the Interview

Falling like Flys

after a hard time on the highstreet some of the bigger (with excessive overheads) fashion retails are feeling the pinch.

Online fashion retailer EBTM put itself up for sale on today (6th Jan 09) as its financial resources were hit by poor Christmas sales and its wholesale division faced difficulties, sending its shares down 87 percent.

The company said it was in an offer period and would explore strategic options, including selling the group in whole or part, and may seek alternative short-term funding options if it was unable to find a buyer.

"Whilst conversion levels on the webstore have been strong and ahead of previous periods, traffic and average transaction values have been down and overall, trading in the online retail division has been below management expectations," EBTM said in a statement.

It's a sorry state this country is in and if customers don't support shop and events that they feel strongly about they may disappear to leaving less choice.

The BIG UrbanShop Interview

Now entering its tenth year of trading the UK’s number one on-line clothing store is so much more than just a place to get quality garms and urban apparel. They sponsor acts and events, they have their own radio show, release mixtapes, the list is endless. Here is an interview that Brendan Deane did with Glyn Berrington, the man behind the whole situation.

Hi Glyn, thanks for taking the time out to do this interview. So let’s kick off by giving people a little bit of a background about sturban clothing. When exactly did you start doing what you are doing and tell us how it all unfolded.

Well it all started back in 1999 when a couple of friends were looking to get into e-commerce, 5 months later headstrong was born and they realised they needed somebody to run things as the manager they had in was a bit flaky. November 99 they employed me and a week later sacked they other guy and put me in charge but that was a joke. These guys were suits, had no interest in what we did and didn’t understand the whole scene that we were involved in consequently nothing happened and I couldn’t manage anything. A few years on they realised they were not making money one of the partners dropped out and eventually the remaining partner made me an offer which we chatted about and in 2002 I took over Headstrong. The first year I took over I made major changes and we saw an increase in business by 400-500%.

You used to be called Headstrong but changed to sturban clothing. Why was that?

Man that was one of those suit things, you know you are made an offer in good will and you bite the mans hand off but in the mists of it all you don’t dot all the i’s an cross all the t’s and they come back and bite your ass. I don’t want to go into it too much right now but we didn’t own the domain name headstrong.co.uk and were offered it for rent by the owner for £25,000.00 which is silly, so we changed the name proving that we could do it all again and that the name was not important, but a costly lesson that still goes on but that’s another story.

I see you support a lot of the smaller UK underground labels, rather than the typical US or mainstream lines. Why is this and is supporting independent something you see as important?

That goes back to my background, I was brought up the punk rock scene and went on to compete internationally in an underground sport that had no funding, so the concept of DIY and doing it better appeals to me and I understand what it’s like to get up at 5am every morning to train then work 8 hours a day, go back to the gym till about 9pm for nothing more than the love of it and that answers your question, that’s why we support the little guy, the underground.

Ten years trading! That’s a long time! Congratulations too that. Over the ten years you must have seen a lot of changes. How is it different now to when you first started? Is it better or worse?!

Better, worse it don’t matter everyday you get up and apply yourself, everyday you learn and everyday you try and earn a crust. I don’t have time to worry about wannabies, ifs and buts, I don’t watch other sites and worry about what they are doing and what brands are big, looking for the next bandwagon to jump on I just do what I do.

What lines did you do really well with in 2008? What are you top sellers?

2008 what a year all that doom and gloom. Zoo York always sells well for us, I think people know that we have done Zoo since we start (almost), that we understand the brand and that we get the biggest and best product in the UK because of that. Lumberjack shirts did well as was predicted, the Orisue and Insight carrot leg jeans did well I don’t think any other sites took these styles so it was like a real core find, Selvedge denim finally took off for us after pushing it for years. Winter jackets are something we always do well with again not many people carry bigger jackets has the last few years the winters have been kinda warm, and of course all over prints from the likes of Nomis which as only just entered the UK market.

What can we expect for the 2009 season? Anything that people should be up on?

Right now it’s just a progression of 2008 plaid is still there, selvedge denim, all over prints but mainly from core brands not bandwagon jumpers. I think 09 will be slim pickins brands are going bang, changing hands and retailers are playing it cautious.

You seem closely connected with a bunch of musicians from all genres including Hip-Hop, Grime, Dubstep, Dub Reggae, Drum’n’Bass, etc. Let’s talk about some of the people that you have previously sponsored.

Yeah again the way we sponsor is random I personally have to like what they are doing or the person behind the music which is why things are varied. We have strong connections with UkRunnings, Wolftown, Tricksta and LATE those guys have been through thick and thin with us and I support everything they do because I respected them 100% . Other than that off top of my head we sponsor www.bringdaruckus.com a Scottish hip hop site, Juttla dubstep, RealTalk magazine a reggae dancehall publication, HHBRadio.com and Out of Your Mind, Jelluzz grime and even as random as Drifter Jon a guy who races drift as in Tokyo Drift.

You have the new mixtape and DVD ‘100% Exclusive’ out at the moment with leading UK mixtape series UK Runnings. How did all that come about and tell us how you met up with Tricksta and UK Runnings.

Me and Tricksta bothers from another lump we chat daily and we think so alike and I know if I say I need a beat for a video Tricksta will send exactly what I need in 5 mins and it will be spot on. “100% exclusive” is the third mixtape we have done with UKRunnings, we were chatting about how wannabies were copying what we were doing with SturbanClothing/UKRunnings mixtapes and I was mad I hate it when people cant be original, anyway out the blue Tricksta went ok let’s do a mixtape and DVD and make every track on the mixtape EXCLUSIVE to SturbanClothing, and that was it but I think Tricksta in an attempt to help me out and kick back, shot himself in the foot. 100% Exclusive came out, took abit longer than expected but Tricksta pulled out all the stops and made it and made it good, everybody in the industry stood up and said man you’re mad doing this as a freebie this should have been a UKRunnings album and sold, but Tricksta stuck to his word and made it 100% Exclusive and more importantly made it so that no other wannabie could copy the concept it was off the scale!!!

You have always done FREE delivery which is a big look. Is this just for UK customers?

Nope that’s worldwide and something we have done since 1999, others are starting to offer it now but usually if you spend over a certain amount we do it on every order.

Do you sell a lot of clothes to other countries?

Yeah at the min we do loads to Europe due to the exchange rate, places like Australia and New Zealand are also big we used to sponsor a Drum & Bass radio show in NZ a few years back, USA is always big strange they are willing to pay double for their clothing by buying from the UK but I think that they love their home brands and often have trouble getting them, Zoo York, Rogue Status and Diamond all sell back to the US in a big way and I suppose that leave Japan. When we first start Japan was a big market for us but they had a major economic downturn a bit like we are facing now, however Japan is out of it and we are starting to see major orders coming from there again.

Your blog and podcasts seem to be really taking off too, as well you doing a radio show for Hip-Hop Basement Radio. Where and when can people check for all that?

The blog is probably the main place to pick up al SturbanClothing gos check out SturbanClothing Blog, we update it daily and are always on the look out for people interested in writing for it, we think the whole community feel is the vibe we are going for not some blog that just sells out site but informs people about what’s behind the brands, us what’s going on that may interest them. If you interested in the podcasts which change weekly check the forums we have rooms dedicated to graffiti/streetart, hip hop and the podcasts. We run this thread where we start with a track then people suggest tracks to follow on with some connection and then they are get complied into podcasts it works well and gets support form some of our core customers and friends. HHBRadio show is basically our podcast and goes out every Friday at 7pm vai HHBRadio.com.

Well all the best of look for 2009, before you go is there anybody you want to shout-out or anything you’d like to add?

I’d like to say thanks to sturban clothing for taking time out of their busy daytime schedule to do this interview. Please visit www.sturbanclothing.com NOW and check out all the latest lines, as well as making the most of their current discounted SALE!!!

Bringdaruckus.com (BDR) was the brainchild of Chris Torres who was shocked at the lack of attention Scottish hip-hop gets within the music industry and felt it was time for a change. Chris said, "I was looking to find more information on Scottish hip-hop but found it difficult to locate information on new releases, gigs and artists. Apart from the Scottish hip-hop forum there was not much else. This is when I thought about starting up a website that could remedy this problem. The aim was to build an online community for hip-hop in Scotland. A place where homegrown acts can showcase their talent and fans can get the latest gig information in Scotland." On April 1st 2006, bringdaruckus.com was born.

Drifter Jon we like to try and support interesting people who are doing what they do for the love of it and are basically into sturban clothing and that's how we came across Jon Beezy, here's his bio in his words, we like him but before we go into it we found out 2 interesting facts. His track car does 5 MPG, and for every event he spends £400 on tyres, and that's why this guy needs free clothes from us;-)
