SturbanClothing “HEROICALLY” Saves the World as Christmas is Cancelled! (Maybe)

It’s long been know that Santa Claus lives in the Nordic region with Mrs Claus and his helper elves, who tend his reindeer and help make presents for the children of the world. What is less well-known is that Kris (as he prefers to be called) lives and invests heavily in Iceland, which as we all know has been burdened by the global financial meltdown, more to the point Kris had huge investments held by Icelandic banking giant Landsbanki, which was the parent company of internet banking provider Icesave, and this collapsed recently 'freezing' funds. “He's crazy with his money!”, said Mrs Claus while shivering in a kinky one-piece, “I tell him to invest wisely but he just calls me a hoe 3 times. It's very upsetting”

Kris is not a happy chappy and the usual “ho ho ho” cannot be heard ringing through his Santa factories. Due to generous welfare systems and high wages Kris has, sadly, had to let go of many of the traditional 'Santa’s Helpers' that made presents for children all over the world and helped tend the Reindeers. “I'm chuffing starving!”, said Rudolph when asked about the lack of food, “Without the elves I'm just wallowing in my own muck without any carrots! I'm not leading the sleigh in this state, I can barely jump”

El Ves, union representative for Santa’s helpers, is quoted as saying, “Many of the helpers that have worked for many years with Kris are having to return to traditional jobs in shoemaking, but this is a small market and Kris was the biggest single employer of elves in the world, it will have knock on effects”. El Ves also proclaimed, “Kris is gutted. There's nothing that excites him more than emptying his giant sack into kids socks. He can pretend to empty it elsewhere, but it's no consolation is it??”

Kris recently released this shock statement; “If the global economy continues to go down this the path I’m not sure if Santa’s factories - and indeed Christmas - can survive!”. This will undoubtedly have a huge effect on the world, with millions of children worldwide waking up on Christmas morning with no presents.

With everything that's going-on we're simply left wondering, what is Christmas all about without Santa? We put that question to Kris and he replied, “Yes it is that bad, we are all trying our hardest but we may have to miss out some countries or cut back on some of the naughty children”, he went on to add “It’s a sign of the times and very sad but yes, Santa is bigger that Jesus. As a matter of fact, Santa is bigger than most things! Except for that Rik Waller bloke...and the BFG of course”

This leaves one very important question, well two actually - will Christmas survive and has anybody got a job for a fat lad with flying reindeer for one day a year?

We asked sturbanclothing.com for there comments; “In light of these latest statements from Kris we at SturbanClothing are cancelling Christmas and moving on to The January Sales early.” When reminded that January sales are actually named after the calender month, they responded, “It may seem odd to have January sales in December but as Kris says; things are hard out there! I mean, who ever thought elves would have to return to shoe making?”

Nasty Jack

Your new CD ‘Shotter Music’ is a tribute to reggae music. Who are your favourite reggae artists and why?
Ninjaman is my all time favourite, he gives you a stage show, entertainment whilst still bringing a light hearted angle to his war bars. He is also political, taking digs at the government, poverty etc. Tenor Saw was the original Movado, a ragamuffin, spitting raw bars earlier than anyone else. I am a big fan of Supercat as well Yami Bolo was the first young DJ I heard of. I also listen to a lot of sound tapes like stereo mars, stone love, metro media and more.

How long did the CD take to create?

I made all the beats and recorded everything in about 6 months

How would you describe your release?
It’s a reggae/grime CD with a mixture of dancehall/grime and Dubstep influenced beats. I have been really surprised at the response it’s receiving, it wasn’t aimed at a wide audience, I made it more as a pet project/tribute to reggae rather than trying to be commercial with the release so all the great coverage and support I am getting has been fantastic.

Tell us about the CD, apart from yourself who else is involved?
Well the CD was mixed and hosted by Logan Sama who is the number 1 DJ on the grime scene in his weight division. There are features from Stormin, Teddy Brukshut, Flowdan and Skepta. I did the majority of the production but there are 2 outside productions by Zombie who produced ‘One Spliff a day’ and True Omega who produced ‘Me Na Kiss’.

The CD drops December 22nd, just in time for Xmas. Would you recommend listening to it over Xmas dinner?

Why not, I listened to Rinse all day last Xmas.. lol

There are some killer tracks on your new CD. I can’t even tell you how much I’m in it! LOL. What is your favourite track on the CD and why?

Lol... thanks man, glad you like it, a lot of effort went into it. I don’t really have a favourite but I do really like the Skyjuice rhythm, firstly because I named it after my favourite ‘Sound Selector’ Skyjuice and because I got to work with some different artists on that one.

What record label are you signed to and are there any other acts on the same label?

I am not signed to any major label; I work closely with a community label in West London Gold Seal recordings where I do most of my recording. They have worked with and given industry support to pretty much everyone on the scene at one time or another; they also help me join the dots with contacts, legal and marketing support as well as a load of other services. But I’m my own boss, I source my own manufacture, distribution, producers, artwork etc... I am in control of my music and my business.

Who distributes your music?
My physical stuff is distributed by Absolute/Universal and the Orchard do my worldwide digital distro.

It is a CD and digital release, so where can people get it?
EVERYWHERE ... lol, all major digital stores, all major retail outlets HMV, Zavvi etc..

The physical CD is a limited edition CD, mixed and hosted by Logan Sama. The digital release comes in 2 flavours vocal and instrumental and is DJ friendly, so full unmixed tracks. I have also rereleased ‘Pimp on Flows’ my 2007 mix CD.

So what’s next release wise for you?
2009 – I have a couple of singles coming out and then the album is due in the 2nd quarter.

Grime and Hip-Hop gets a rough ride in the media especially with the gun & knife crime issue. Do you think as a recording artist that you have a responsibility to the youth of England?

Of course we do, as do film directors, TV production companies, the press etc... But no one gives them a hard time! I have the right to entertain people in the same way that they do. The public isn’t stupid, if I spit about being poor and signing on does that mean the listeners are going to go out and give up their jobs n sign on? No, people have the right to make up their own minds and music is a release and outlet for us artists and the listeners, we are not telling people how to lead their lives and to blame music for the current problems is just targeting an easy scapegoat.

Any plans to release an album?
Yeah, my debut album is coming out in the 2nd quarter of 2009.

Any plans for any new videos?
My first single for the album is ready; we are shooting more over the coming months in preparation for the album and build to its release.

Before you go give us your website details.
Check out myspace.com/nastyjackfever and Nasty Jack

Anyone you want to shout out?
Big up G, Big up the Gold Seal Project, Stormin, Teddy Brukshut, Logan, Skepta, Flowdan and all the N.A.S.T.Y. Big up all the people on road.

Thanks and respects for doing this interview.

Nasty Jack ‘Shotter Music’ is out December 22nd on Gold Seal Recordings CD and MP3.

Joey TPA New York Graffiti Since 1972

Hi Joe thanks for taking time out to chat with us today about the early days of NYC graffiti probably best place to start is by telling us what you have written and how you got into graffiti over 30 years ago?

Aww heck, if I told you the truth, you wouldn’t believe it, but here goes, coz I believe in telling it like it is. In 1972, I was truckin’ home in a zig-zag sort of way and saw some girls hanging out in a little clique under some tree on a corner in the bedroom community of New York City, a place called Queens. I was born in Brooklyn and moved to Queens with mom and dad for a better chance. Anyhow, these 4 little girls were all writing in something called a slam-book, a sort of private community diary for the females in our class. They wouldn’t let me read it, but they did let me see how they fixed up the cover with methods they used; sparkles glitter and what especially caught my eye, was the cool cursive and curly-twirly letters they used. I also noted that none of them used their real name. Instead, they had an alias. I guess you can see where I’m going. These 4 bad little girls took out some toy markers and dropped their “tags” on the light-post, mailbox and fire-alarm box right there in broad daylight. I was hooked. Next thing you knew, “PRESTO” was born. Names like “TITAN” and “LIL’ MOUSE” followed, but were eventually replaced with longer standing and more recognizable names like “JOE-188”, “ROCKET-88”, “RC-3”, “JOEY TC” and “JOEY TPA”. All that went down from 1972 to my last days in actual graffiti writing, in or about 1981.

You are also one of the founding members of TPA what is the importance of a crew in graffiti?

It’s has the same importance as it would to any group. Through solidarity came security and fraternity. Socialization and the exchange of energy and thoughts were part of that. You had your guys and they had you. You had homies in all sections of a huge city with over 6 million people in it. Always a place to crash, to eat, to hang, to hide if need be. TPA was huge, with numbers well into 1000+ at its hi-points. VADE TPA was our Daddy. He was the committed and occasionally irascible innovator of the truest kind. VADE put up with no shit, and had your back without question. Funny thing is, I had to take HIS back quite often as you can guess. DEMO TPA was the other 1/3 of this thing called TPA He was definitely the mercurial humor behind us, I used to call him the black Irishman. JOEY TPA was the glue that held it all down with a slice of pizza in his hand at every turn, even in the yards. What an origin -Three very different dudes, but all in line, with mad love for each other and what we did, graffiti in its purest form. Without a good crew, it would have been hard to be successful because we naturally fed off one another. Some people might say we were like a pack of 3 semi-domesticated wolves.

I suppose over the last 30 years you've seen some changes in graffiti, what do you think are the most important and where do you think it's going?

The most noticeable change to me is that graffiti has become globally rampant. It is also further accepted as a legitimate art form. What basically started out as an illegal way to pass time on the Northeastern Atlantic seaboard in the United States has morphed into a profitable business venue for writers all over the world. Another huge change I have seen is the evolution of the materials used and the application and skill methods involved. Between the paint, the pigments now available, the tools like (caps and nozzles and markers), an art that was once considered a “poor kids” pass-time has become an expensive but affordable hobby or potential career.

I know we sponsor a fair few writers here in the UK and it seems most of them have had their houses raided, seems like a big crime these days, you must have had some close scrapes?

You know, I could include this as an answer to your last question. I’ve seen graffiti become more legal and accepted, but I have also seen it become more widely contested and with MUCH stiffer penalties. There’s always going to be grey areas in anything controversial, but I do think that the persecution of certain individuals has been extremely unfair and almost criminal in itself. However, I also accept that some individuals do indeed commit some pretty bad stuff out there that makes it tough on everyone involved, especially those who are rally innocent. You have to surround yourself with the right people and realize you will be judged by your peers and especially more so, by the external onlooker who tends to make a snap-judgment. I personally have had some close scrapes, but without the penalties a writer can suffer today. Personally, I don’t know it’s really worth it nowadays to risk a life-changing stint for the sake of getting up. Back then, graffiti amounted to misdemeanors, today it’s automatically a heavy felony. I think its bull.

Along with the serious side there must be some funny stories that stand out for you?

Hell yes! Part of the lore was the dark humor in it all. I mean really…think about it. Back then, we were surrounded by the fascination of cartoon characters. Cartoons and comics are vehicles of humor. It may have been brash, but it was also a trip to see an 8 meter tall Donald Duck rolling into your home station on your way to work one morning. Imagine someone’s face when the doors to a train welcomed you with an ear-to-ear smiling Yosemite Sam. Getting chased for racking your cans or even out of a lay-up had its own terror, but it was a terror that made you laugh so hard you pissed your pants after all was said and done. (Provided you got away of course)

And again what gave you the most satisfaction?

For me, it was standing on the platform of any subway line in NYC and seeing the TPA CREW consistently roll by, represented by well over 25-50 dedicated writers at any given time, on the insides, the outsides, and all over the system. Every stairwell, every turnstile, every token booth, every station, every goddam train and bus for Chrissakes! In a city like NYC, that’s infinite and that’s why TPA became one of the giants. It all started with 3 kids.

OK so these days I believe that you don’t get involved with the activity but are still involved with graffiti and TPA?

Hehehe. All things come to pass, my man. All things come to pass. Keep in mind, another great change in this thing we call graffiti is that when I was practicing it, we (all of the writers), were young teenagers. Today, most of the writers are grown men. What does that tell you? I involve myself with the promotion and support of legalized graffiti (because the penalties are so stiff and I’m a bit concerned for the welfare of youngsters nowadays), and because I want to see a healthy outlet for up and comers as well as for the oldsters that have art in their veins. The thrill of being covert still applies, I admit, but one has to weigh the scales in their own personal world to decide what’s up.

And what about Street Level 9 what's that and where's it going?

SL-9 is headed in the direction of being a successful manufacturer and provider of casual apparel dedicated to young men and women. SL-9 and TPA actively sponsor deejays like Cocheze who was the traveling dj for KRS-1 as well as up-and-coming skateboarders who want to go pro. We try to maintain a sharp business model to accommodate the mid-range price points to ensure that retailers and their customers alike are happy with a well-made and healthy product. We keep it edgy, but clean. By attending events all over the world, we keep the SL-9 name rolling off people’s lips as well as in their line of vision. We maintain a cool blog at http://sl-9.blogspot.com/ where you can catch up on a slew of different events and news in and out of the graffiti community, but still, all in the mix.

K.O & OD HUNTE - Back To The Hip-Hop EP

We really like this here at sturban clothing! We love something a little funky and this brand new four track extended player on Southern Cuba Records is constantly near our CD player! ‘Blow Up’ has a real catchy hook and that T-Pain, Akon feel with effected vocals, ‘The Art’ is has some good lyrics, ‘Be Like This’ is just banging and the last track ‘I Gotta Go’ is just plain original with a great club feel. This EP is qwerky and funky and totally refreshing! If a lot of UK Hip-Hop just depresses you then put something uplifting on and step into the world of K.O and OD Hunte.

SID from Retreat Clothing

We've been rocking Retreat for a few seasons now and just taken delivery of the new design and they are amazing so we thought we'd catch up with Sid and chat about Retreat, just has he was a bout to leave for a MGMT gig in Leeds.

hey Sid how's things with Retreat can you give us some insight into your background within streetwear?
Hiya Urban Shop. Retreat is going ok. We are in our 3rd year now and at times it's a struggle being a one man band but I can't complain too much.
My background from my school to college days are based on art and design and photography. I wouldn't really class Retreat as a Streetwear brand as I don't really understand this "label" which has been assigned to a specific market.
The main focus for Retreat is to produce good designs for t-shirts catered for all markets and not just a manufactured one which has been aligned to a certain scene.

What inspired you to start Retreat?
I started Retreat basically out of a bit of boredom of wearing the same types of t-shirt designs and figured I could produce something fresh and original, and my pals kept saying I should print a few up for them. I printed up a limited number (which is something we still follow to this day) and sold them to a bunch of friends and then approached a few local stores around my way.

What other streetwear brands inspire you or do you look up to?

In terms of other brands out there, I would say my opinion has changed in the last 8 or so years. I grew up skateboarding in the mid to late 80's and always loved the old graphics on clothing and boards from the likes of Santa Cruz, Powell Peralta and early Stussy. I then got into Supreme and discovered Bape in about 97 after seeing a picture of Ad-Rock from The Beastie Boys wearing a Very Ape UK tee. Back then it wasn't really heard of outside of Japan and the internet didn't hold all of the info as it does today so I found it exciting trying to find out more about this particular brand.

I remember being in Camden market back in 1998 and seeing a few old original Bape tees being sold there. This was when they were printed on standard tees without the Bape collar tag. I think I bought my first tee from Camden

I was really inspired by guys like Sk8thing and Kazuki Kuraishi from Japan and have always been a fan of Futura 2000.

I think today I'm not into too many of the international brands.
Some of the ones who seem to have blown up over the past few years seem to have lost their way a bit in my eyes. I mean the tee shirts which are being produced by alot of them are weak. It seems they get established, move onto cut and sew pieces but forget to focus on the strong t-shirt designs which is what initially got them there in the 1st place. Maybe I'm just bitter and jealous. lol

Some of the brands I do like are GRN appletree, independent brand The Award Tour from the US (Phil is a friend and I love his passion and his belief in his brand).

Other brands/artists which inspire me are Ben Drury, Will Bankhead and Emmet Keane from the early Park Walk days to Answer/Trilogy Tapes, Tonite, PAM to name a few

What direction do you see streetwear going in next and what about Retreat?

I can't really comment about where "Streetwear" is going as to be honest I'm not that bothered. For Retreat to continue plodding on - releasing some nice graphics for tees and sweaters, and to hopefully get a few more international stores (especially in the US to hopefully stock us)and to maybe do some collaborations in the near future. I would be lying if I said the thought of producing cut and sew items didn't interest me but one day at a time, I'm in no rush.

Finally anything you wanna say to SturbanClothing contingent
Yeah keep up the good and hard work and don't take it all too serious. As someone once said "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it." ...

cheers
Sid

Flying Fortress

“The Art of Rebellion” I & II sold more than 70.000 copies world-wide.

Flying Fortress, who named himself after a World War II bomber long time ago, the creator of the always on the go being Teddy Troops, has origin in Munich and is rooted in graffiti culture. From Bavaria, which is probably better known for exporting beer than those subversive teddy bears, Flying Fortress troops march out into the world. As rockers, roadies or cannibals these helmeted guys riot and cause high spirits from Los Angeles, to Munich or Hong Kong. "Part of Rebellion # 1 Flying Fortress" doesn’t only show the peacefull Teddy Troops in the streets, in galleries, on stickers, skate boards or as vinyl toys, but also Flying Fortress collaborations with other artists such as Pez or The London Police Crew – and of course with Dave the Chimp and their collective project “Visual Rock Stars”. Completed is the whole thing by illustrations and t-shirt designs for labels such as Stüssy, Fenchurch or Hessenmob.

"Part of Rebellion" shall be the answer to all those books about street art, which are put into the market without having any relation to the scene. Every four months a new volume will be published, next artist will be Flying Fortress colleague Dave the Chimp from London.

Methods NYC

MethodsNYC have just done a collaboration with Bucktown Entrainment, what I found more interesting tis that they have put some text about themselves and to be honest many in the UK have still not heard of MethodsNYC but what they do is massive can you believe they threw a party and the DJ was Afrika Bambaataa

Methods Clothing has been a forerunner in the NYC Hip Hop Scene for years. Established in 2004, MethodsNYC have pushed the artwork of leading artists from around the world on their apparel for nearly half a decade. Known as a movement rather than simply a clothing brand, MethodsNYC has also been responsible for legendary showcases in the city featuring acts such as Afrika Bambaataa, Jeru the Damaja, Keith Murray, Heltah Skeltah, Nice n Smooth, Black Sheep, Sadat X, Group Home, DJ HYPE, and countless others. BIG or what?
