Zoo York Delivery of T-shirts

As the title says we've had another delivery from Zoo York of mainly t-shirts. Zoo York have really pushed the boat out this season and done some cracking design plus they have introduce the new Super Tees - the new t-shirt style that is custom made using better fabric, add touches such as tabs at side and taped inside neck and incorporates the design that are all over prints or use a higher number of inks. Also they have include a number of garments featuring the photographs of Matt Weber and if that's not enough sturban clothing is one of the only places in the UK that you can get Free one of the Zoo York Ghostface limited edition skate decks. The Zoo York Institute, in association with Def Jam and Cornerstone Promotion, is proud to announce an exclusive collaboration that celebrates the recent release of Ghostface Killah’s critically-acclaimed new album, “The Big Doe Rehab.”

Limited to less than 500 promo-only pieces and only 15 in the UK.

Who is Sid Stankovits?

Sid Stankovits grew up in Southern California, skating through out the 80's with good friend and fellow G&S rider Neil Blender. Sid calls his tattoo parlour in Santa Ana, California home, Sid can rightfully list Tokyo, Japan as his informal second home, as his international clientele has been building phenomenally over the past 15 years of tattooing and now you can have a Sid Stankovits on your chest as he’s hooked up with Matix clothing to do a few artist t-shirt designs for them and of course they are old school tattoo designs

The Elementz Interview

First and foremost what do the Elementz represent? I’ve seen a slogan ‘love is all there is’, what’s all that about? Are you guys hippies? (No disrespect).
L: Do hippies still exist in this millennium? Maybe I am, I recycle a lot, does that count? The Elementz just stands for the parts of music that are essential. Good strong elementz that fit together: Rhythm & Melody and a good story, we try to see how far we go conceptualising these elements. We represent change too I hope.

What or who gave you your first breaks in music?
Z: I started promoting my own night called Kung-Fusion back in 2000 with Phatste (Pre-Dealmaker) and Mc NME. I met LIATI at the second event and we started producing from there. The break came when Big Trev gave us a list of industry numbers and we started EU Entertainment.

How many releases have you had to date, and what has been the most successful / enjoyable?
L: We’ve done a few cuts but were just really accelerating now in 2008. Our first commercial release was with Scor Zay Zee on a compilation record on Dealmaker Records. We self released Elementz Universe Vol.1 & 2 and some guest tracks for people like, Big Cakes, Shameless and Lowkey. They’ve all been enjoyable for different reasons. We managed to get Skinnyman on Elementz Universe Vol.1, which was funny to put together cus we didn’t know shit about how to deal with artists and the industry outside of Nottingham! But I learned quick because we did it all ourselves, got a distribution deal, got national radio play, called all the magazines, PR, managers and artists and just winged it. Elementz Universe Vol 2 has been the most successful. We got record of the week at 1xtra, No.1 on the Itch FM Chart, supported Ghostface Killa on the back of it and sold a lot of records, but not enough though cus I still got a big ass mortgage the last time I checked!

I see you do a chart show on HHB Radio, how can people get there tracks to you and is there anything in particular you look out for in new acts.

Z: We just love fresh music but a lot of the UK stuff lacks that quality. We haven’t done one for a while because of this! Any hot tracks email us up at Info@theelementz.co.uk show us some hot shit. PLEASE!

L: Also, its not purist UK Hip Hop we play, we’ll represent anything that’s hot, Grime, Baltimore, RnB or whatever.

You have a studio in Nottingham, is it available for hire and if so how would people go about booking?
L: E-mail Info@theelementz.co.uk or message www.myspace.com/elementzuniverse. We’ve spent a year building it so its commercially sound, no dusty music goes out the door, were serious about the “sound” we want to achieve which is why we’ve got the analogue equipment as well as the latest digital, we grew up on music from the 70’s which had the sweetest sound we have, that’s the benchmark, its got to be warm but crisp like disco We will be available for hire very shortly, were formalising the business side now.

Your New CD is called Crushmode. What label is it coming out on and where can people expect to purchase it?
Z: The CD’s coming out on OYM Records and its going to be available in HMV and most independent stockist. We also have it coming out digitally on Itunes etc..

L: …and that’s via UK Street Sounds.

What does the title Crushmode actually stand for / mean?
L: Were at the end of The Elementz Universe series so were in Crushmode with it, its exploding and so were shifting the sound. Because it’s a compilation LP rather than an album it has tracks from Elementz Universe 1 & 2 like High Grade with Skinnyman and Coppers On My Case with Taskforce but its mainly unreleased new music. The new tracks indicate where The Elementz sound is going and we have this 80’s arcade game theme going through the record and the artwork so Crushmode is the game we playing, and it’s the last life before it dies and we flip the sound completely.

There’s two of you in the group what does each person bring to the table?

Z: Its mixed roles in this game. I sometimes take more of a musical role in the content of the tracks where Liati might build up the rhythm section and then go onto the mixing and arranging side. We both produced solo tracks on this record but the majority of it was a joint effort all of which went through The Elementz studio setup in the end.

L. Yep, I kinda engineer a lot and Zoutz is the musically trained one. He gives the tracks direction, and we both kinda build the story of the tracks together. Right now were working more conceptually rather than building a beat, giving it a rapper and the input ending there.

Who is the best artist you have worked with to date and why?

L: People are best in different area’s. Like Scorz was best at being efficient when recording. He laced 3 verses, hooks and ad libs in 1 take each, where as Wariko’s best at his persistence and dedication when recording. He’s so passionate about getting relaying it right that he’ll go at it till he gets dizzy and falls into the wall of the booth.

Your style doesn’t stick to the typical UK Hip Hop conventions, why is this? Do you even consider yourselves UK Hip Hop and if not what genre would you say you belong too?
Z: This record is Hip Hop. The next record’s going to be different though. I’m glad its not filed under UK Hip Hop still! We’ve captured a new wave of UK Grime MC’s and we reckon a lot of our old fans might be slating us for this, but we consider our sound to be universal (yet still developing).

L:I think its good to be free of genre as much as possible these days, you can get smothered by them, but I recognise you need an identity to sell records. Its so eclectic now and theres so much diverse music coming through that the genre of choice can be: not having one. I was talking to Charles from ZZonked the other day and he calls it “Bugged Out” music. I like that. UK Hip Hop hasn’t been cool for a long time man, we need to explore.

Have you got any solo projects in mind or will you continue to work together as a production outfit?
Z: I’ve got some accidental Dubstep I might have to unleash and still working with Shiva on his solo project.

L:Im doing some remixes kinda on the side to feel out where its going, so im gonna probably throw out a Mixtape with new idea’s and some of the more “Bugged Out” stuff on it. Im remixing Bootay by Bangers and Cash right now. I want to make girls get on the dancefloor so the boys will follow em, then maybe we try dancing again, can anyone remember how that works?

Who do you think is the more skilled producer out of you both? Have you ever tried battling each other to see who can come up with the sickest beat?
Z: We constantly influence each other in our own areas of expertise. We both make some of the sickest beats in the UK and I don’t feel too big headed saying that. Sometimes I’ll come in the studio and think “how am I gonna top this guy” it’s a constant battle!

Interview with UK rapper LATE

LATE is an old time friend of sturban clothing, he's been in the hip hop game more years than anybody cares to mention and he has a new release about to drop sponsored by sturban clothing called "2 Thousand and LATE" we caught up with the legend and put a few questions to the man.

Where are you from and what was it like growing up there?
I’m from Wolverhampton AKA Wolftown, The city of broken dreams and failed dodgy schemes its like any other working class area of the UK, I've done fair share of dodgyness, been around all the wrong things, lost a lot of people on the way, just like anyone that hasn’t grew up in cotton wool.

How did you get your name and is there a story behind it?

It was my tag back in the day, I was a graffiti artist back in the day, I was all city, I was wanted, my tag was mentioned on the news

Was there a situation or a person who inspired you to rap?
It was a natural progression from dj’ing and mastering the 4 elements of hip hop, B-Boying, graffiti, dj’ing right thru to mc’ing, my first influence to rap was when I heard ICE-T on the song 'High Rollers'.

Tell us about your latest release.
Its basically a mixtape to help promote my forthcoming album “ Below Street Level” But '2Thousand & LATE' is a mixture of new tracks, collaborations, freestyles and Remixes I featured on, it features KB DA KIDNAPPA from the group STREET MILATRY, JT THE BIGGA FIGGA, JON CONNERS, BRICK SAAVY, LO–KEYS, STRESS, FAMOSO, MOKEOUT, JAI-BOO, SIZE8, RICKY LEE, CONMAN, CEE-ROCK “THE FURY”, NUT-RAGEOUS, PANAMA, JAK DANIELS, and S.P.C rappers THUGSTAR, MURDER ONE & KUWAIT, there is also a bonus chopped n screwed track on there by DJ LOON

What do you prefer; playing live, recording in the studio or battling?
I'm basically an artist so the studio is my ideal environment, I love creating that’s what I like to do.

How would you describe your personality? What do you enjoy doing?

I'm either in it or not, if Im in it, Im gonna do it to my best ability, if im not I wont do it, I just love creating things, Cause I came from nothing, I love making something from nothing, I just love hip hop all 4 elements that is what I do.

How did you go about setting up independently?
I never sent a demo out I just wanted to do this my own way and with the help of my bro Tricksta we made it happen, If you believe in what you’re doing it will happen.

What’s your favourite clothing label?
I got so many, Ive got a beer belly so I like the USA labels they cover my gut better, LOL, labels like Pelle Pelle, Southpole, Rockawear, Zoo-York, Phat Farm, I wear a lot of labels that are hip hop based, I don’t wear lable's that don’t respect hip hop, People need to understand that Hip Hop is the most watched culture in the world, designers all over the world watch what hip hop kids are wearing and try and copy that, There is a lot of people today wearing clothes by labels that don’t respect them as a people and a culture, So I try to labels that understand and respect our culture.

Forget the budget, what would be your dream collobo?

AAAHH man, no budget, I would wanna work with all the cats I grew up listening to, like GETO BOYS, all of SOUTH PARK COALITON , all of the SCREWED UP CLICK. ICE-T, ICE CUBE, MASTER, KRS-ONE, SPICE-ONE, MC EIHT, CELLY CELL, ABOVE THE LAW, KOOL G RAP that names a few the list just goes on and on.

With so many artists out there, what are you doing different to get heard?

I'm just being me, im not trying to do what everyone else is doing im just doing me, I'm trying to make music that’s gonna be understood worldwide

Now is your chance to get something off ya chest! Anything getting you down or any opinions you need to voice?
If you wanna get in the game Understand the culture, be yourself, and get in where you fit it. And if it doesn’t happen, still work in the industry because not all rappers are rich but some of those that work behind the scenes are. I think were at a stage where everyone wants to be a rapper and famous and when we get beyond that that’s when we might build an industry out here.

Okay, before you go please give us you’re My Space details

Who is J Dubbs?

Jeron Wilson AKA J Dubbs first picked up a skateboard at the age of 10 in his hometown of Van Nuys, California, after watching his cousin and friends crusin’ around the neighbourhood. Fast forward about 18 years and “J-Dubbs” is still cruisin’ with his friends, the only difference is that for the past nine years, Jeron has made his living as a pro skateboarder, with more Girl skateboard decks (his board sponsor of 12 years) with his name on them than you can count and three pro model shoes with DVS, a company he has been with since the day they began and now there’s the DVS Diamond Supply Co hook up. Not too shabby huh?

Zoo York Giveaway

Back in Feb we mentioned the Zoo York Ghostface colab well because we are one of the coolest shops in the UK (official)we have one of only 15 that are available in the UK to giveaway (see told you we are cool). Zoo York have only made 500 of these decks and T-shirts and as far as we know you cant buy them anywhere definitely not in the UK anyway so enter the Zoo York Ghostface competition on sturban clothing and you could bea lucky winner (then sell it on e-bay and make millions). Meanwhile back in Gotham City...

The Zoo York Institute is proud to announce an exclusive collaboration with NYC’s unbreakable hip-hop collective, the Lordz of Brooklyn.

This limited edition collab features a co-branded ZY skateboard deck and T-shirt with custom graphics that chronicle the band’s gritty Bay Ridge upbringing, graffiti roots, blue collar pride, and deep family ties. Slated to drop in late April, only 500 decks and tees will be available at select retailers worldwide.

“I’m excited to team up with the Lordz because they’re a very New York band that in many ways is the musical equivalent of Zoo York,” says ZY Senior Art Director Christian Acker. “Just like Zoo, the Lordz fully embrace the clash of cultures that make NYC such an amazing place to live and work. We’re immensely proud to support our brothers from across the East River.”

There's a BIG problem with SturbanClothing

There is a BIG problem and have you spotted it?

There is so much good new product from core streetwear companies that it's painful having to choose take this week and we are only 3 days deep.

We have added new graffiti and graphic design t-shirt from the Holland based Razk collective. These new t-shirt designs are so rad and fresh that I would just buy the lot.

We have added Pyromaniac Clothing was the follow on from when two graffiti artist, Cantwo and Stickupkids had got together years previously and made their impact with Montana spray paint. Now years down the road they have collaborated with other graffiti wrotes such as Banos, Smash, Crone, Scotty and Kane to produce a clothing range of custom printed and made t-shirts, hoodies and long sleeve crews.

and

Nomis was formed around 2000 by two brothers Mat and Andre Chamberlain, they set Nomis up to give their snowboarding friends t-shirts, this led to hoodies but stayed local to Whistler. At the sametime their brother Simon was making a name for himself in snowboarding and had just been hooked up by Stepchild snowboards. By chance Simon was invited to the Nixon Jib Fest as a wild card, and turned up out of nowhere and won the contest, and you guessed it he was wearing a Nomis hoodie. Fame came to Simon and to Nomis over night and its grown season on season since then.

and the week isnt finished yet we have denim from Orisue coming, Rogue Status t-shirts and a big drop from Matix we should also get Fourstar back on site any day and I'm sure there's something I've missed......

I've remembered the DVS Diamond collaboration designs wooooooooooooow

Geejay

Sunderland might not be the first place in the world you associate with quality Hip-Hop music, but maybe that’s all about to change as nineteen year-old emcee GEEJAY gets ready to unleash his debut album "I Came To Represent". With his thought provoking lyrics and his distinctive North East accent, GEEJAY is a name that has been bubbling under over the last couple of years with a string of mixtape features, strong radio support, video appearances and guest collaborations. Signed to N.G.U Records by CEO & label-mate DAP-C a few months back GEEJAY has been making waves on the UK underground. After winning "The Home-grown Cuts" competition hosted by Ras Kwame on BBC1Xtra and Sony Music offering him a development deal, things have been really hotting up for GEEJAY.

The debut album "I Came To Represent" features New York legends Canibus and Raekwon The Chef from Wu-Tang Clan amongst others, and is something that is surely going to stamp GEEJAY’s name in the UK Rap community. Support has also come from D-Block’s Styles P who not only features in the video for "Fresh". A Styles P & GEEJAY mixtape is scheduled for release on N.G.U Records in the near future. GEEJAY also features on DAP-C’s new single ‘Music Game’ alongside UK veteran Blak Twang. You’re soon going to agree that you just can’t hate on this man’s grind. He is really in his zone and he is more than ready to represent. His has a string of live dates up and down the UK under his belt and has even played live at Madison Square in New York, USA. 2008 promises to be GEEJAY’s biggest year of his career and hopefully with your support we can all help to make it happen for an emcee with a bright future.

Where are you from and what was it like growing up there?
Easy mate well Im from Sunderland in the north east, its hard man its got the highest unemployed rating in the country and when you come here you can see it man, its just fist fights, stabbings, drink, drugs and job seekers allowance. Its quite mad really but i love it its what shaped me and made me strong and gave me something to touch on lyrically, and because its hard to succeed here they love you more for it if you do.
Its real and honest and I wouldn't wish i was anywhere else. ill rep it to the death

How did you get your name and is there a story behind it?
I wanted my rhymes to be complex very deep and well thought out so i thought, i dont want people to pay attention to the name or why it means this or that, so all i did was take my initials and make a different name from it i wanted something that sounded hip hop and true to a form. so I came up with Geejay, its reminded me of dj and i thought yeah that sounds hip hop so I ran with that.

Was there a situation or a person who inspired you to rap?

My cousin put on a east/west coast cd i heard it an loved it never stoped playing it. and knew id be good at it I could just feel it that as soon as I heard the cd it was what I wanted to do and to this day I still aint lost the love for it. what inspired me was the music the way some of the rappers where using wordplay and how they put it across on a track I was amazed that I was hearing a story with music and rhymes. so I started making music on that level.

Tell us about your latest release.

Crazy!! a total smasher its quite commercial but has a raw north east vibe going on too. my latest single is called FRESH and it features Dap-C. its all about telling the listeners that i can guarantee them they aint never heard anything like this. and telling the haters to stop dissing and pay me no mind instead of showing me love with criticism.

What do you prefer; playing live, recording in the studio or battling?
I cant answer that with one or the other. There all hip hop and i love hip hop so naturally I love every aspect. they all have a different experience.

How would you describe your personality? What do you enjoy doing?
I love making music, chilling with my boys but my true passion lies with torturing emcee's lyrically, I love stepping into a room and showing em that I'm the best in there an will do what it takes to keep that title. i love running em round the field playing with there ego's basically i love hip hop competition. because I'm the best rapper alive right now no question in my opinion and I'm hungry. so ill do what i need to just to eat, you can say I'm very energetic, passionate, reasonable but step on my toes and you have my heart to deal with you know.

How did you go about setting up independently?
I was at a show met Dap-C who I was supporting we clicked an he signed me to ngu quite simple really, cant really elaborate much more.

What’s your favourite clothing label?
parada, gucci lol all the expensive shizzle i luv the hip hop clothing to man but there something i love about the flash clothing eccentric prices and styles they use. you wear it to get looked at and look nice you pay for it and it works lol.

Forget the budget, what would be your dream collobo?
Jay-z straight up the man knows how to make a track not a hit or a smasher but all in all a track a hip hop sound, its sick the way he does it.

With so many artists out there, what are you doing different to get heard?

Names its all about the names, I aint saying much more thats for you punks who need to do it yourself

Now is your chance to get something off ya chest! Anything getting you down or any opinions you need to voice?
Yeah I appreciate all the love Sunderland has given me, but there is always one trying to ride off my success. stay out of my life dont squash a beef then diss me as soon as my video comes out, your nobody you have no skills no big names backing your shit, your wack deal with it you fat fuck.

Okay, before you go please give us you’re My Space details.
myspace.com/geejay88 make sure ya check out every track on there including the black twang feature , and also check out the video's for fresh and heart attacks. take care world and stay up

A Common Question

Now lets put this to bed we must get this question asked everyday and there's only one answer.

QUESTION
The new Obey Anti-War t-shirt has already sold out of medium sizes, which is really upsetting seeing as how I have had my eye on it for my birthday. If there were any chance that this item may become available in my size (medium) I would appreciate it if someone dropped me a line at this e-mail address. This is probably the 5th time this has happened to me on this site and I'm hoping that sometime soon I will actually be able to wear this shirt.

THIS IS WHAT WE SAY ON SITE
99% of the time it is in stock, we cannot get any items, colours or sizes that are not displayed.

EXPLANATION
We order 6 months in advance yes 6 months it is now April and we have already ordered for winter 08. Some of what we order may never be made, some maybe be over sold so we dont actually get what we order but what we cannot do is get any item that we dont have have unless you can order it 6 months before it appears on sturban clothing site.
