Nick Tershay AKA Nick Diamond

Who is Nick Tershay? Have you seen his work? Ever heard of the Tiffany Dunk? Or Perhaps you’ve seen Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross, Alchemist or Curren$y wearing a Diamond T-shirt.

How does it feel to have the person who some people regard as the "Michael Jordan" (Paul Rodriguez) of Skateboarding representing your company?
Paul is great and I have known him since he first started getting good at skating. Joey Suriel who is now the Team Manager of Diamond actually was the first one to sponsor Paul back when Joey was skating for Kareem Campbell’s company City Stars. Paul has been skating for Diamond for a long time now and we are actually droppin’ A collab t-shirt with the new store he just opened called Primitive. I am blessed to have Paul and all the rest of my favourite skaters riding for the company.

In fact, you’ve got a huge all star team, practically every major innovator (Bob Burnquist, PJ Ladd, Eric Koston, Mike Caroll, Justin Eldridge, Jereme Rogers, Jason Dill, Brandon Biebel, Darrell Stanton, etc etc) in skateboarding for the last 8 years rides for Diamond, how is this?
When I first started Diamond Supply Co. in 1998 I was already heavy in the skate scene since the early 80’s. I spent my entire life since I was 10 years old on a skateboard and just happened to grow up with some of the best skaters in the world at EMB in San Francisco. Just from being friends with different skaters around the world I end up meeting everyone that is friends with them, if they rip and are cool with other people on the team they usually just end up bein down to ride for us. Like I said before, we are very blessed when it comes to the love we get from the skate community.

You’ve contributed a lot to "skate fashion" and SB Dunks would not stand where they do today (with skaters) if it were not for your collaboration on the Tiffany dunk in the managers series, do you think this is true?
I think that Nike SB has a dope skate program and pretty much all of their skaters are also on the Diamond Team. I don’t think the Diamond Dunk really made a difference in the skate world. Skaters have been rockin’ and skating in Nikes before SB’s even came out, Nike skate shoes would have been a hit regardless if we made the Diamond Tiffany dunk or not.

Diamond Supply has been worn by many famous rap artists, is this on purpose? How does Diamond Supply find it’s way to rappers, organically? or through friends? or product placement?
A lot of rappers come to our store and shop since we are on Fairfax in LA. Others just pick it up somewhere probably because it says Diamond on it. There has been some real surprises tho, such as Lil Wayne wearing a Diamond t-shirt on the cover of Rides Magazine and Rick Ross coming into our store claiming he has almost every Diamond t-shirt already. Things like bug me out and I have no idea how they know about a skate brand?

I do however hook up a lot of artists because over the years we have become homies with them and they show us lots of love in videos and magazines like Strong Arm Steady, Evidence, Alchemist, Self Scientific, DJ Muggs, Cool Kids, Pac Div, Currency, San Quinn, Bun B, Kaz Kizah and some other cats. The Game gets Diamond stuff from us sometimes and I am cool with Ice T and his kid Lil Ice so they come by the shop to get Diamond stuff as well.

What brands are you feeling?

I like Levis 501 jeans and whatever t-shirts friends from other companies give me. I like Crooks & Castles, Mighty Healthy, Blackscale, Huf, Supreme and FourStar but mainly wear Polo outerwear, Army Surplus jackets or my own stuff. Kicks are usually basic white or black Chucks, Vans and Jordan’s. I skate in Lakai Carroll Selects and DVS J Dubbs.

What collabo’s can we expect in the near future? What drops can we expect from Diamond in the next few months?
It never ends with drops, its the nature of the business…. gotta keep it movin’. The bigger we get the more I have to crank out and the crazy thing is I am our only designer. I have designed over 80 tee shirts just this year and I have this carpal tunnel messing up my hand and wrist. Expect to see a cut n sew line from us in ‘09 amongst many other things.

As for Collabs I have slowed down on them and you will only see 1 collab out of our 16 holiday t-shirts. We are however doing 3 new shoes with DVS, a travel bag with Gravis/In4mation, A shirt collab with our friends from APB in Hawaii.

Independent fashion retailer -what does that mean to you?

Independent fashion retailer -what does that mean to you? Because to me it means offering something different, new and original that you can't get everywhere. Which is why we at SturbanClothing buy clothing from four continents to bring you the newest, freshest brands out there. No bandwagon jumping and no going with what’s "in" this season, and that’s what sturban clothing is all about - keeping it diverse.

Maybe we have it all wrong so whats does the term "Independent fashion retailer" mean to you?

Has Shepard Fairey sold out?

Surly you all know who Shepard Fairey is? Just incase you don't he's the man behind Obey and Andre the Giant and the question is has Shepard Fairey sold out?

Weird question to ask you may think but recently some of his work was defaced somebody scrawled a large dollar sign on Andre the Giant's forehead along with tears streaming down the giant's fat cheeks and Shepard took this as a personal remark on him and his work. here's what Shepard had to comment about the incident "Some people define things as cool not by the amount of integrity they have but by how underground they are."

Now I agree with what Shepard said there but I do think people are also fickle and will move on to the "next big thing" rapidly, personally I like what Shepard's about I think that we are very close in our beliefs and some of our cultural background I do struggle with some art and design that's makes cultural references to a particular place and I personally feel isolated by them a perfect example is the Obama design I really struggle to understand why anybody in the UK would be interested in Obama or want to wear the design on a t-shirt, yeah great may be the first black US president but who really cares?

Nicolas Muller of Arcus

Nicolas Muller of Arcus Clothing

Nicolas Muller was born in the spring of 1982 and grew up in a small Swiss town called Aarau. Having the Alps in front of him meant it was only a question of time before he started skiing and being that he was also a skateboarder meant it was only a question of time before skiing changed into snowboarding. Back then, the resort of Laax, Switzerland was famous for its great halfpipes, and shortly after Nicolas started riding them, he also became famous for his stylish straight airs.
Nicolas has also been gracing the front pages of probably every European snowboard mag, along with riding great at every single contest he enters. For the last four years, Muller’s parts in Absinthe Films’ videos have been amazing. Add a down to earth character and a very open approach to life, and you get one unique person and snowboardera nd the point of all this is?
Arcus, my own little streetwear label. Freddie Kalbermatten and I started it four years ago. It’s still very small and underground. Right now you only can get it in select shops in Europe, but we’ll be in Japan soon and hopefully in North America, too. So marketing-wise, I should say-watch out!

Ambiguous Matt Ball Advert

Lumberjack Shirts and Hooded Shirts

We haven’t said much about coming trends recently other than in the our newsletter and there’s a lot happening with the new Aut/Win season upon us so here’s our take on what’s happening and we are going to have to split this over a couple of posts this one being shirts.

The major thing with shirts this season has to be the lumberjack look or plaid design if you haven’t already seen it where have you been? Well the whole lumberjack / Trucker look as been rocked across New York and many major cities for awhile now but it’s finally hitting many of the brands we stock such as Ambiguous and Fly53 but you will find some early example in Ezekiel and Mada with some plaid used in cowboy style shirts.

So Ambiguous must have the biggest offering of plaid with shirts, overshirts and jackets all in the infamous plaid and here’s a few below.

ambiguous ambler jacket Ambiguous Bennington shirt Ambiguous Culmination Hoodies

Fly53 have gone for the bright look and personally I like it.

Fly53 devil beard shirt

The other big look this season has to be shirts with hoods with offerings from Fly53, plaid and jersey combination from Ambiguous and drill cotton and jersey from Insight.

Ambiguous Drake Hooded Shirt Insight Devil Red Hooded Shirt Fly53 Anex Hooded Shirt

My favorite pieces have to be the Insight Devil Red, Ambiguous Bennington and the Fly53 Devil Beard.

The Matix Lord Of The Lines contest series makes the jump across the Atlantic and will take place September 13th in Castleford, UK with £1000 in prize money up for grabs. Here’s what Matix had to say about the event:

“Lord of the Lines introduces the new generation of skateboard competition. Using three street-influenced obstacles placed in a row, skaters have 10-minutes to create their best line. Style and execution play a huge part in the points with the top rider from each heat going through to the finals, where the best line will take home the cash. Matix are bringing the Lord of the Lines contest to the UK for the first time on Saturday 13th September. The stage is set for the Xscape Centre, Castleford ”

The Wu Tang Clan - Zoo York Connection

Wu Tang Clan - Mystagogue Vol2 was only ever released on audiotape, released around 1996 or '97, the package was a freebie with Slap skateboard magazine and was only available on copies bought in core skate shops.

This is pretty early Wu, with gritty Rza, with beats from Tical, Forever, 36 Chambers, etc. mixed with jazz and funk.

The mixtape was sponsored by a skateboard company that at the time sponsored Kevin Taylor, who now rides for Zoo York.

Interview with Carrot Clothing

Carrot Clothing can trace its roots back to 1999, a tumultuous time for its owner’s native Serbia. In a noble effort to uplift lagging spirits and voice personal concerns about freedom, he began printing t-shirts featuring anti-war messages. This move, landed him in jail and at the mercy of unforgiving local authorities for spreading allegedly “terrorist” policies, but that's all history

When did you start designing?
Back in ‘99. I printed t-shirts with anti war messages, mostly against establishment. Local authorities caught me and I was in jail for a six months…That is beginning of the Carrot story.

Whats the inspiration, idea, and or theme behind your upcoming seasonal release?
Actually I never plan themes for upcoming seasons. Lot of things inspire me these days.

Where do you think you would be right now if you weren't designing?
Probably a musician, at the moment I currently play in 2 different bands. But lot of familiar faces now are drug dealers or criminals…life is tough over here.

Where does your overall inspiration come from?
Like I said it is lot of things. Sometimes it is high fashion, sometimes it is street…lot of different things. No rules.

How long have you been designing? Do you have a team, and if so what’s everyones role in the designing process?
I designing for a 10 years right now. I have no team, but from time to time some of my friends Dalek, 123 Klan, Sieben make graphic for us.

Are there any other brands you would like to collorbate with?
Sure! Couple of days ago I spoke with Danny Boy from Dissizit! Also Eric Brunetti from FUCT promise us collaboration.

What designers or artist of any kind do you admire and why?
There are plenty of designs I respect. I would love to see 123 Klan design for Mark Jacobs…lol

Music also plays an essential role in the design process. So what are you currently listening to?
Artist ranging from Kanye West, Talib Kweli to John Buttler trio…

Does your clothing brand define streetwear fashion? If so how?
Streetwear styles do have one thing in common - individuality! In the end, it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it. “Streetwear” isn’t defined by what labels are rocked, but by who you are.

With every brand comes a signature logo & definition behind it. What is yours & what does it stand for?
Name & logo Carrot represent roots. Carrot Brand have strong root in street scene, which is not case with all companies I know.

Where do you see your clothing brand within the next year?
Right now we work on special project with 123 Klan - it is limited edition of sneaker. Sneaker scene is very interesting to us.

Do you have any advice for entreprenuers?

Yeah…have fun!
